Conducting safe distanced research
6 - 9 April 2021
The training workshop will be run through three 2-hour sessions at 4 - 6pm GMT on 6, 7, 8 April and two 2-hour sessions at 1- 3pm and 4 - 6pm GMT on 9 April.
Following the outbreak of the global Covid-19 pandemic, the ways we conduct research have changed. Challenges in contemporary fieldwork have never been limited to so called ‘difficult’ or ‘extreme’ settings, and researchers are confronted with numerous challenges regardless of where they work. With these challenges in mind, this training workshop will prepare researchers by offering practical tools with which they can address the new conditions of conducting research through a series of panels and interactive sessions on the interlinked themes of ethical decision making, health and wellbeing, gender and subjective identities, and risk and safety. There will also be an additional fifth session on distanced research techniques.
This event offers a dynamic space for pre- and post-field researchers to connect, form a cohort, and learn from each other in a safe space. To maintain this we structure our activities around in-depth and dynamic sessions with interactive activities in which we ask attendees to participate. We welcome institutional staff and particularly teachers of research methodology to attend.
The training workshop will be led by TNE co-founders Dr Caitlin Procter (EUI) and Branwen Spector (LSE) with sessions taught by leading academics and practitioners in each topic covered who will share their knowledge, recommendations, and compassion as we collaboratively address these subject areas.
